2019 AFL Round 4 Preview

Published on April 8, 2019

Round 4 begins with a must win match on Thursday night between the Sydney Swans and the Melbourne Demons at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Coming off their first win of the season, Sydney hopes to consolidate this performance with a win at home against a winless Demons side. After a shocking loss to Essendon on Friday night last week, can the Demons finally find their 2018 form to secure the first win of their season? This game can be viewed on Free to Air on Thursday night for those Melbourne based viewers not making their way up to Sydney for this game. For those keen Melbourne footy fans, let’s turn our attention to the games played at the MCG and Marvel Stadium in Round 4:

Friday April 12th – Collingwood Magpies vs. Western Bulldogs (MCG)

If the ladder were to predict the winner of this game, you would go with the Bulldogs, however, the Magpies have had the toughest draw over the first three rounds. The Bulldogs going in with 2 wins against Sydney and Hawthorn, and an unpredicted loss to the Gold Coast might spark some concerns for their supporters. Collingwood on the other hand, losing to the current flag favourites Geelong in Round, convincingly beating the Tigers in Round 2, only to have a Grand Final Deja-vu loss to West Coast at the MCG should bounce back to form. It all gets underway at 7:50pm on Friday night.

Saturday April 13th – Essendon Bombers vs. Brisbane Lions (MCG)

So perhaps the Bombers have more fight to offer than once thought? An unpredicted win over the Demons on Friday night last week was a surprise to us all, however the Bombers put together some inspired football. The Lions are having a great start to the season, winning all 3 of their games to leave them in second place on the Ladder. Taking out West Coast, North Melbourne and Port Adelaide, the Lions are entering the game with some good form, however, as we have seen in 2019, anything is possible. With the first bounce getting underway at 2:10pm, book yourself a seat for a game that could make or break the season for both teams.

Saturday April 13th – North Melbourne Kangaroos vs. Adelaide Crows (Marvel Stadium)

Sitting in 17th position, the Kangaroos seem to struggling to find any continuity to their game. Almost losing by 100 points in Round 1, the Kangaroos have since put together two respectable games against the Lions and the Hawks, managing to lead for more than half the game before being overrun. You can expect them to get off to a good start against the Crows, given the home ground advantage, but can they hold on? Adelaide appears to struggle with winning games at home but has been able to take out a win against Sydney at the SCG. It all comes down to structure as the game commences at 7:25pm on Saturday night.

Sunday April 14th – Saint Kilda Saints vs. Hawthorn Hawks (Marvel Stadium)

Another flip of the coin as to who will win this game. Both teams with 2 wins but very in very different ways. The Saints winning Round 1 in a thriller against the Suns, and a close win against the Bombers in Round 2 before a fight back and close loss to the Dockers in Round 3. The Hawks have defeated Adelaide in Round 1, before giving up a commanding lead to lose Round 2 to the Bulldogs, followed by a come from behind victory against the Kangaroos in Round 3. Your guess is as good as mine for this game, starting at 3:20pm for the Round 4 closing match.
