With such a plethora of shows arriving on our doorsteps, it can be hard to choose what to see. EVITA is definitely one for the ‘must-see’ list. Boasting huge star-power with the likes of Tina Arena, this new production of the old classic must be seen this summer.

With more than 20 major awards to its credit, the original Broadway and West End production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical EVITA is now playing at Arts Centre Melbourne.

EVITA charts the story of Eva Perón, wife of Argentine dictator Juan Perón, from her humble beginnings through to the extraordinary wealth, power and status which ultimately led her to be heralded as the ‘spiritual leader of the nation’ by the Argentine people.

Featuring some of the best loved songs in musical theatre, including ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’, ‘On This Night of a Thousand Stars’, ‘Oh What A Circus’, ‘You Must Love Me’, and ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’, this smash hit show is packed with classic tunes!
Tina Arena lives up to her reputation as she commands the stage and her heart-felt rendition of the classic ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’ brings the house down. The other leads and supporting cast do a fine job bringing their roles to life. The ensemble is great with some great dancing demonstrated in particular through the Tango number and the precision of the military goosestep.

The show utilises a lot of technology such as a huge robotised screen which is projected with various backgrounds and historical footage of the original Eva Perón which serves to remind the audience of the historicity of the story.
If you are in the mood for a heart-felt story, pack some tissues and go and see EVITA.
