Based on the iconic, hit movie, this new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a bit of cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There, he turns a class of straight-A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band with the intention of getting them into the Battle of the Bands, unbeknown to their parents and the school’s strict headmistress.
Those who have seen the film will be very familiar with the story and watching the musical will bring up fond memories and nostalgia. Those who have never seen the film will still be blown away by this fantastic production. The story is a truly inspiring one and the music and staging, simply genius. Cashing in on the recent success of musical’s such as: Matilda, the illustrious Andrew Lloyd Webber (known for his composing of: Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera, Cats and Evita to name a few) has created a truly brilliant piece of theatre with fresh new songs that will have your heads banging and toes tapping as well as some of the songs from the original film that people love so much.
The cast led by Brent Hill in the role of Dewey Finn is sublime. Brent’s energy in electric and his charisma and chemistry with the child stars is a sight to see. Joe Kosky, the alternative Dewey Finn is extremely funny and channels Jack Black’s character from the original film so fantastically. Amy Lehpamer plays the very challenging role of headmistress Rosalie Mullins and does a brilliant job on the difficult vocals and the quirky character. The supporting cast are very, very strong but the real heroes are the fantastic cast of kids. Playing their instruments live on stage, singing, dancing, acting and rocking, they will have you wondering how so much talent can fit into such tiny beings. Their energy and enthusiasm are infectious and they will have you rocking in the aisles before the show is over.
The costumes, lighting and set are extremely well thought out and put together and truly enhance the performance of the show. The set is constantly on the move and cleverly recreates many of the locations from the film.
If you want a testimonial for why you should see this show, of all shows, look no further than that of Jack Black: “I laughed! I cried! I rocked!” This is very true. The show will leave you in stitches but is contrasts this with some beautiful moments of pathos. Throughout all this, the amazing live band and cast will have you rocking along.
The show is very kid-friendly so why not take the family to a matinee? It will also make for the perfect date night, so get on and see this before it leaves. This is not like any show you have seen, it is truly amazing.
